Overview
This guide explains how to care for your mouth after dental implant surgery to support healing, reduce complications, and protect your implants during the critical integration phase.
First 24 hours – critical instructions
- Do not rinse, spit, gargle, or touch the surgical area.
- Do not disturb the wound or blood clot.
- Avoid brushing directly on the implant site.
- Do not chew on the implant or healing cap.
- Do not use a straw.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol completely.
- Rest and keep physical activity to a minimum.
Bleeding
- Light bleeding or blood-tinged saliva is normal for up to 24–36 hours.
- If bleeding increases, place a damp gauze pad directly over the site and bite firmly for 20–30 minutes.
- Repeat if necessary.
- Sit upright and avoid talking or chewing while applying pressure.
- If heavy bleeding continues, contact us immediately.
Swelling and bruising
- Swelling usually peaks after 48–72 hours.
- Apply cold packs for the first 24–36 hours (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off).
- Sleep with your head elevated for the first 2 nights.
- After day 3–4, warm compresses may help reduce swelling.
- Bruising around the cheeks or jaw is normal and fades within days.
Pain and medication
- Mild to moderate pain is normal for 3–5 days.
- Use prescribed medication or ibuprofen / paracetamol as instructed.
- Always take pain medication with food.
- Avoid alcohol while taking medication.
- Do not drive or operate machinery while using strong pain medication.
- If pain increases after day 4, contact us.
Antibiotics
- If prescribed, take the full course exactly as directed.
- Do not stop early unless instructed.
- Contact us if you develop rash, swelling, stomach pain, or allergic reactions.
Diet
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Avoid hot food and drinks while numb.
- Soft foods only for the first several days.
- Avoid chewing on the implant side.
- Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, spicy, or seeded foods.
- Do not use a straw for at least 72 hours.
- Return to a normal diet gradually as comfort allows.
Oral hygiene
- Brush your other teeth normally.
- Avoid brushing the implant area for 24–48 hours.
- After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water 3–5 times daily.
- If prescribed, use chlorhexidine mouthwash twice daily.
- Do not floss near the implant site for 7 days.
- Do not use electric toothbrushes or water jets near the implant initially.
- Clean any visible healing cap gently once brushing resumes.
Smoking warning
Smoking significantly increases the risk of implant failure, infection, and bone loss.
Do not smoke for at least 2 weeks after surgery. Ideally, avoid smoking entirely during healing.
Activity and rest
- Rest on the day of surgery.
- Avoid exercise for 24–48 hours.
- Avoid heavy lifting or intense activity for 7 days.
- If you had sedation or general anesthesia, do not drive for 24 hours.
Dentures, flippers, and temporary prosthetics
- Do not wear dentures or flippers unless approved.
- If allowed, use for cosmetic purposes only.
- Do not chew using temporary prosthetics for several weeks.
- Poorly fitting appliances can cause implant failure.
Stitches (sutures)
- Some stitches dissolve on their own.
- Others may be removed after 7–14 days.
- Loose stitches are usually not dangerous.
- Contact us if stitches fall out early with heavy bleeding.
Sinus precautions (upper jaw implants)
- Do not blow your nose for 2 weeks.
- Avoid straws and smoking.
- Eat soft foods.
- Avoid strong mouth rinsing.
- Mild nose bleeding may occur temporarily.
What is normal during healing
- Swelling for 2–3 days
- Mild bruising
- Jaw stiffness
- Temporary numbness
- Slight earache or sore throat
- Neighboring teeth sensitivity
When to contact us immediately
- Heavy bleeding that does not stop
- Severe or worsening pain after day 4
- Fever or chills
- Bad taste or foul-smelling discharge
- Rapidly increasing swelling
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Allergic reactions to medication
Long-term implant care
- Brush twice daily.
- Use floss and interdental brushes.
- Maintain excellent gum health.
- Attend regular dental check-ups.
- Poor hygiene can cause peri-implantitis and implant loss.
