# Post-Op Care – Dental Implants

## Overview

This guide explains how to care for your mouth after dental implant surgery to support healing, reduce complications, and protect your implants during the critical integration phase.

## First 24 hours – critical instructions

- Do not rinse, spit, gargle, or touch the surgical area.
- Do not disturb the wound or blood clot.
- Avoid brushing directly on the implant site.
- Do not chew on the implant or healing cap.
- Do not use a straw.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol completely.
- Rest and keep physical activity to a minimum.

## Bleeding

- Light bleeding or blood-tinged saliva is normal for up to 24–36 hours.
- If bleeding increases, place a damp gauze pad directly over the site and bite firmly for 20–30 minutes.
- Repeat if necessary.
- Sit upright and avoid talking or chewing while applying pressure.
- If heavy bleeding continues, contact us immediately.

## Swelling and bruising

- Swelling usually peaks after 48–72 hours.
- Apply cold packs for the first 24–36 hours (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off).
- Sleep with your head elevated for the first 2 nights.
- After day 3–4, warm compresses may help reduce swelling.
- Bruising around the cheeks or jaw is normal and fades within days.

## Pain and medication

- Mild to moderate pain is normal for 3–5 days.
- Use prescribed medication or ibuprofen / paracetamol as instructed.
- Always take pain medication with food.
- Avoid alcohol while taking medication.
- Do not drive or operate machinery while using strong pain medication.
- If pain increases after day 4, contact us.

## Antibiotics

- If prescribed, take the full course exactly as directed.
- Do not stop early unless instructed.
- Contact us if you develop rash, swelling, stomach pain, or allergic reactions.

## Diet

- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Avoid hot food and drinks while numb.
- Soft foods only for the first several days.
- Avoid chewing on the implant side.
- Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, spicy, or seeded foods.
- Do not use a straw for at least 72 hours.
- Return to a normal diet gradually as comfort allows.

## Oral hygiene

- Brush your other teeth normally.
- Avoid brushing the implant area for 24–48 hours.
- After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water 3–5 times daily.
- If prescribed, use chlorhexidine mouthwash twice daily.
- Do not floss near the implant site for 7 days.
- Do not use electric toothbrushes or water jets near the implant initially.
- Clean any visible healing cap gently once brushing resumes.

## Smoking warning

Smoking significantly increases the risk of implant failure, infection, and bone loss.

Do not smoke for at least 2 weeks after surgery. Ideally, avoid smoking entirely during healing.

## Activity and rest

- Rest on the day of surgery.
- Avoid exercise for 24–48 hours.
- Avoid heavy lifting or intense activity for 7 days.
- If you had sedation or general anesthesia, do not drive for 24 hours.

## Dentures, flippers, and temporary prosthetics

- Do not wear dentures or flippers unless approved.
- If allowed, use for cosmetic purposes only.
- Do not chew using temporary prosthetics for several weeks.
- Poorly fitting appliances can cause implant failure.

## Stitches (sutures)

- Some stitches dissolve on their own.
- Others may be removed after 7–14 days.
- Loose stitches are usually not dangerous.
- Contact us if stitches fall out early with heavy bleeding.

## Sinus precautions (upper jaw implants)

- Do not blow your nose for 2 weeks.
- Avoid straws and smoking.
- Eat soft foods.
- Avoid strong mouth rinsing.
- Mild nose bleeding may occur temporarily.

## What is normal during healing

- Swelling for 2–3 days
- Mild bruising
- Jaw stiffness
- Temporary numbness
- Slight earache or sore throat
- Neighboring teeth sensitivity

## When to contact us immediately

- Heavy bleeding that does not stop
- Severe or worsening pain after day 4
- Fever or chills
- Bad taste or foul-smelling discharge
- Rapidly increasing swelling
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Allergic reactions to medication

## Long-term implant care

- Brush twice daily.
- Use floss and interdental brushes.
- Maintain excellent gum health.
- Attend regular dental check-ups.
- Poor hygiene can cause peri-implantitis and implant loss.
