Post-Op Care – Hemovac Drainage Tube

Reading time: 1 min read

Overview

This guide explains how to care for your Hemovac drainage tube after surgery to support safe healing, reduce the risk of infection, and monitor fluid output correctly. Please follow these instructions carefully and contact My Imperial Care if you notice anything unusual.

What is a Hemovac drain?

A Hemovac drain is a small tube placed near a surgical site to remove excess blood and fluid during healing. It is connected to a small collection container that creates gentle suction.

The drain helps reduce swelling, prevent fluid buildup, and lower the risk of infection.

General care instructions

  • You may see fluid and blood in the drain. This is normal.
  • You may feel mild burning or pulling from the stitch that holds the tube in place.
  • The drain is usually removed once fluid output is less than 2 tablespoons per day.
  • Do not sleep on the same side as the tube.
  • Secure the tube and container inside your clothing to prevent pulling.
  • Take sponge baths unless your doctor instructs otherwise.
  • Ask when you may shower or bathe normally.
  • Ask how to best protect the drain site from getting wet.

How to empty the drain

  • Empty the drain at least twice daily or more often if needed.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Lift the stopper without touching the open port.
  • Turn the drain upside down and empty it into a measuring cup.
  • Record the amount each time and calculate the total per day.
  • Press the drain flat on a hard surface to restore suction.
  • Close the stopper securely.
  • Wash your hands again.

Changing the dressing

  • Change the dressing once per day or if it becomes wet or dirty.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Remove the old bandage.
  • Wash your hands again.
  • Clean the area using saline solution and a cotton swab.
  • Apply a new bandage covering the entire incision area.
  • Tape it securely.
  • Wash your hands again.
