Post-Op Care – Liposuction

Reading time: 2 min read

Overview

This guide explains how to care for yourself after liposuction to support safe healing, reduce complications, and achieve the best possible result. Please follow these instructions carefully and contact My Imperial Care if you notice anything unusual.

Hospital stay and discharge

Most patients are discharged according to the surgeon’s medical assessment once they are stable after surgery.

Binder / compression garment

  • You will be placed in a binder immediately after surgery.
  • The purpose of the binder is to help contour your skin.
  • It should be worn continuously for 4–6 weeks, except during showers.
  • The first time you remove the garment, have someone with you in case of dizziness.

Bruising and swelling

  • Bruising and swelling are expected after liposuction.
  • Bruising usually begins to improve after 48 hours and resolves within 3–4 weeks.
  • Swelling may take 6–9 months to fully resolve.

Pain and medication

  • A burning sensation and discomfort in the treated areas are normal.
  • Follow all instructions provided with your pain medication.
  • Do not drive for 24 hours after anesthesia or while taking strong pain medication.

Activity

  • For the first few days, rest with your feet and legs elevated.
  • Slowly increase to your usual activity level.
  • You will not be able to resume your normal exercise routine for 1–2 weeks.

Showering and bathing

  • You may shower 24 hours after surgery.
  • Water does not harm healing incisions.
  • Avoid baths, hot tubs, swimming pools, oceans, and lakes until the incisions are fully healed and scabs have disappeared.
  • You may use antibacterial soap gently over the area.

Incisions and wound care

  • A few small insertion sites will be closed with one or more sutures.
  • These sites may ooze clear or red fluid.
  • You may change the gauze as needed while oozing continues.
  • These sites usually heal within 1–2 weeks.

Diet

Follow a low-carbohydrate diet (maximum 30 grams per day) for the first 2–3 weeks.

This helps your body excrete excess fluid and swelling and allows results to become more visible sooner.

Infection warning signs

  • Foul-smelling drainage
  • Yellow or green discharge
  • Fever above 38.3°C (101°F) with chills
  • Redness and warmth around the incision

Smoking warning

Smoking significantly increases the risk of skin loss and delayed wound healing.

Do not smoke while your body is healing.
