Overview
This guide explains the post-operative nutrition stages after bariatric surgery. Following these stages carefully is essential for healing, preventing complications, and achieving long-term weight loss success.
General post-surgery nutrition principles
- Eat slowly and chew thoroughly.
- Stop eating immediately when you feel full.
- Avoid drinking during meals.
- Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before drinking.
- Prioritise protein at every meal.
- Avoid sugary and high-fat foods.
- Stay hydrated throughout the day.
- Take prescribed vitamins and supplements daily.
Protein and fluid targets
- Protein: 60–80 grams per day
- Fluids: 1.5–2 litres per day (minimum)
- At least 1–1.5 litres should be high-protein fluids during early stages
Stage 1 – Liquid diet (Weeks 1–2)
This stage allows your stomach to heal. Only smooth liquids are permitted.
- Consistency: thin, smooth, no lumps
- Meals: small sips throughout the day
- Protein shakes
- Smooth soups
- Protein water
- Milk with added milk powder
- Protein custard
Avoid all solid foods. Do not use straws.
Stage 2 – Puréed diet (Weeks 3–4)
Food must be completely smooth, similar to mashed potatoes.
- 4–6 small meals per day
- Puréed chicken, beef, turkey or fish
- Puréed eggs
- Lentils or pulses
- Puréed cottage cheese
- Thin high-protein yoghurt
- Protein soups
- Hummus or bean dips
If food is difficult to tolerate, return to liquid stage for a few days before progressing again.
Stage 3 – Soft diet (Weeks 5–8)
Food must be soft enough to mash with a fork.
- 3–4 meals per day
- Scrambled or poached eggs
- Porridge
- Soft cereals with milk
- Fish
- Soft minced meat
- Lentil dishes
- Soft pasta dishes
- Soft casseroles and stews
Stage 4 – Regular healthy diet (After week 8)
- Three meals per day
- Small portion sizes
- Protein first, vegetables second, carbohydrates last
- Avoid sugary drinks and carbonated beverages
- Avoid frequent snacking
- Continue vitamin supplementation
Dumping syndrome
Some patients may experience dumping syndrome, which includes nausea, dizziness, sweating, diarrhea, and weakness after eating sugary or fatty foods.
- Avoid sugar-rich foods
- Avoid high-fat meals
- Eat slowly
- Record trigger foods
- Follow your nutrition plan strictly

- Be patient with your recovery process.
- Your taste preferences may change.
- Use small containers for portion control.
- Plan meals ahead.
- Do not punish yourself for occasional setbacks.
- Focus on long-term habits, not perfection.
- Follow wound-care instructions strictly.
