Post-Op Care – After Anesthesia

Overview

This guide explains how to care for yourself after receiving anesthesia. Anesthetic medications can affect judgment, coordination, and reaction time for several hours after surgery.

General anesthesia safety rules

  • Do not drive any vehicle until your doctor allows it.
  • Do not drink alcohol.
  • Do not perform dangerous tasks or tasks requiring critical judgment.
  • Do not take sedative medications unless prescribed.
  • Eat light meals on the day of surgery (crackers, toast, soup).
  • Gradually return to your normal diet if you feel well.
  • Have a responsible adult stay with you for the next 24 hours.

Regional anesthesia (arm block)

  • Numbness may last for several hours.
  • Avoid burns, cuts, bruises, or pressure injuries.
  • Be careful with hot objects.

Duration of restrictions

These restrictions apply until at least the next morning. Some patients may need several days to fully recover.

Emergency warning signs

  • Chest pain
  • Leg pain
  • Shortness of breath

If any of these occur, go directly to the nearest emergency department.
