This guide explains how to prepare safely for surgery to reduce risks and improve recovery.
Weight and BMI
- Reach your target weight before surgery if possible.
- BMI above 30 significantly increases complication risk.
Smoking and nicotine
- Stop smoking at least 4 weeks before surgery.
- Nicotine patches, gum, and e-cigarettes must also be stopped.
- Nicotine reduces oxygen delivery and delays healing.
Compression garments
- You may be advised to buy a compression garment before surgery.
- Purchase two garments if possible (one to wear, one to wash).
Medications to stop
- Aspirin / Clopidogrel – stop 2 weeks before surgery.
- Warfarin – stop 4–5 days before surgery (medical supervision required).
- Tamoxifen – stop 4 weeks before surgery.
Pre-operative hospital assessment
- Blood tests
- MRSA swab
- ECG if required
- Nursing assessment
Eating and drinking before surgery
- No food 6 hours before surgery.
- Clear fluids allowed up to 4 hours before surgery.
- No milk, chewing gum, or fizzy drinks.
Final consultation
Your surgeon and anesthetist will review the procedure and risks before surgery.
