Post-Op Care – Rhinoplasty

Reading time: 1 min read

Overview

This guide explains how to care for yourself after rhinoplasty (nose surgery) to support safe healing, reduce complications, and achieve the best possible result. Please follow these instructions carefully and contact My Imperial Care if you notice anything unusual.

Dressing and splint care

  • You will have tape and an external splint on your nose after surgery.
  • Do not remove the dressing and keep it dry.
  • You may have internal packing or an internal splint. Leave these in place.
  • You may change the drip pad as often as needed.
  • When drainage slows, you may stop using the drip pad.
  • Packing is usually removed after 2–3 days.
  • The external splint is usually removed after 5–7 days.
  • If you have an internal splint, it is usually removed after 12–14 days.

Resting position

To minimize swelling, rest propped up on pillows for 4–5 days.

Bruising and swelling

  • Bruising and swelling are expected after surgery.
  • If the nasal bones were repositioned, bruising may appear under the eyes.
  • It may take 3–4 months for all swelling to fully resolve.
  • Soft ice packs or frozen peas may be used to reduce swelling around the nose and eyes.
  • Do not place ice packs directly on the skin as this may cause skin healing problems.

Bleeding

  • Small amounts of oozing and bleeding are normal.
  • Change the drip pad as needed.
  • If bleeding becomes more than light staining and does not stop, elevate your head and contact us immediately.

Pain and medication

Mild to moderate discomfort is normal after surgery. Follow all instructions provided with your pain medication.

Driving

  • Wait at least 24 hours after anesthesia before driving.
  • Do not drive while taking pain medication.

Activity

  • Avoid bending your head below your waist.
  • Do not return to weight lifting, aerobic exercise, or high-impact activities for 4 weeks.

Numbness

You may experience numbness or tingling of the facial skin. This may take weeks to several months to fully resolve.

Showering and bathing

  • You may shower 24 hours after surgery.
  • Avoid getting the external splint wet.

Infection warning signs

  • Drainage with foul odor
  • Yellow or green discharge
  • Fever above 38.3°C (101°F) with chills
  • Redness and warmth around the incision

Smoking warning

Smoking significantly increases the risk of skin loss and wound healing complications.

Do not smoke while your body is healing.

Hematomas

  • Hematomas are collections of blood and pus within the nasal septal space.
  • They are rare but must be reported immediately.
