**This guide:** Full nutrition guidance for all stages (protein, fluids, supplements, and progression).

## Overview

This guide explains the post-operative nutrition stages after bariatric surgery. Following these stages carefully is essential for healing, preventing complications, and achieving long-term weight loss success.

## General post-surgery nutrition principles

- Eat slowly and chew thoroughly.
- Stop eating immediately when you feel full.
- Avoid drinking during meals.
- Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before drinking.
- Prioritise protein at every meal.
- Avoid sugary and high-fat foods.
- Stay hydrated throughout the day.
- Take prescribed vitamins and supplements daily.

## Protein and fluid targets

- Protein: 60–80 grams per day
- Fluids: 1.5–2 litres per day (minimum)
- At least 1–1.5 litres should be high-protein fluids during early stages

## Stage 1 – Liquid diet (Weeks 1–2)

This stage allows your stomach to heal. Only smooth liquids are permitted.

- Consistency: thin, smooth, no lumps
- Meals: small sips throughout the day
- Protein shakes
- Smooth soups
- Protein water
- Milk with added milk powder
- Protein custard

Avoid all solid foods. Do not use straws.

## Stage 2 – Puréed diet (Weeks 3–4)

Food must be completely smooth, similar to mashed potatoes.

- 4–6 small meals per day
- Puréed chicken, beef, turkey or fish
- Puréed eggs
- Lentils or pulses
- Puréed cottage cheese
- Thin high-protein yoghurt
- Protein soups
- Hummus or bean dips

If food is difficult to tolerate, return to liquid stage for a few days before progressing again.

## Stage 3 – Soft diet (Weeks 5–8)

Food must be soft enough to mash with a fork.

- 3–4 meals per day
- Scrambled or poached eggs
- Porridge
- Soft cereals with milk
- Fish
- Soft minced meat
- Lentil dishes
- Soft pasta dishes
- Soft casseroles and stews

## Stage 4 – Regular healthy diet (After week 8)

- Three meals per day
- Small portion sizes
- Protein first, vegetables second, carbohydrates last
- Avoid sugary drinks and carbonated beverages
- Avoid frequent snacking
- Continue vitamin supplementation

## Dumping syndrome

Some patients may experience dumping syndrome, which includes nausea, dizziness, sweating, diarrhea, and weakness after eating sugary or fatty foods.

- Avoid sugar-rich foods
- Avoid high-fat meals
- Eat slowly
- Record trigger foods
- Follow your nutrition plan strictly

## Lifestyle and recovery tips

- Your taste preferences may change.
- Use small containers for portion control.
- Plan meals ahead.
- Do not punish yourself for occasional setbacks.
